Emile’s Sports Car Performance Takes Top Honors for Best Maseratis at Maserati Days 2010
Seaside CA - August 13, 2010
Amid a stunning collection of beautifully maintained and restored Maseratis at Concorso Italiano 2010, two exceptional Maserati Boras presented by Emile’s Sports Car Performance took First and Second place, in the Bora class of this years’ Maserati Days competition. The Bora class was the largest, with nine of the best presented examples we can remember in recent years. They were judged by a discriminating panel long time Maserati enthusiasts with extensive knowledge of the marque. Over fifty cars were scrutinized in the following areas: body, engine, interior, and overall aesthetics. Among this field, two elegant black Boras stood out; a 1973 Euro version, and a recently completed Euro conversion of a 1975 Bora.
Both cars were painstakingly prepared by Emile Dell’Aquila, owner and CEO of Emile’s Sports Car Performance located in Santa Cruz, CA. Emile and his small staff of expert mechanics spent hundreds of hours preparing both cars, with most of the effort spent on the ’75. Until only a few months ago, this car was a full US spec Bora replete with the large black DOT rubber bumpers, front and rear. As a Bora aficionado, Emile wanted to restore his ’75 Bora back to the original appearance envisioned by the car’s designer, Giorgetto Giugaro. “The Bora has such a timeless design, it looks just as fresh from a design perspective as it did when it was unleashed on the world in 1971, almost 40 years ago” said Emile. “I’ve seen this car from every angle, and I’m very pleased with how the conversion turned out.” Working with suppliers from all over the world, Emile was able to source the necessary parts to complete the conversion, including the hand crafted stainless steel bumpers which were created by a friend and fellow Bora owner in New Zealand. Many modifications to the chassis and body panels were required to complete the transformation, and the results speak for themselves; the ’75 took runner up at this year’s competition.
Emile’s 1973 Bora took the top honor at this year’s event. This car is no stranger to the podium. It received Best Maserati at the 2008 Concorso Italiano, as well as the Guigiaro Designer award in 2006. From the distinctive brushed stainless steel roof to the hand crafted stainless steel bumpers, this car is possibly one of the finest examples of this classic Italian supercar from the 1970s. More refined and elegant than other cars from this period, the Bora is like a race car dressed up in a tuxedo. “I sometimes like to sit in my garage and simply soak in its elegance” said Emile.
A believer that these machines were meant to be driven, Emile and his crew drove the cars down from his shop in Santa Cruz, CA. “These two beauties see several thousand miles of spirited driving on Northern California roads every year, and occasionally make an appearance at the Laguna Seca raceway”. A detailed photo essay of the labor intensive clutch replacement on the 1975 Bora can be seen in issue 94 of the Maserati Club International magazine, Viale Ciro Menotti. Emile documented the bumper conversion which will appear in an upcoming issue of the magazine.
